An unexpected move has just occurred, the Detroit Lions have made a move to trade for former second-round pick Denzel Mims. In this trade, Detroit receives Denzel Mims and a 2025 seventh-round pick and the Jets receive a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick. Let’s break down how this trade helps the Lions and Mims, plus my thoughts on the trade.
What This Trade Means For The Lions
Adding a player like Denzel Mims gives the Lions a player who will come in and immediately compete for a spot on the roster as the X receiver. With Jameson Williams being suspended the Lions seriously needed X receiver depth and they get that immediately with Mims. On top of that, Mims still has plenty of potential, being one of the most athletic receivers coming out of college in recent history. If Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell can bring the most out of Mims, then he has a chance to make a huge difference on Detroit’s roster. With Denzel Mims being a height-weight-speed type of receiver it also replaces what they lost in D.J. Chark this past off-season.
What This Trade Means For Denzel Mims
Mims was getting progressively pushed further down the depth chart during his time with the Jets, due to other receivers coming in, arguments with coaches, and overall impatience from New York. Coming to Detroit gives Mims a chance to show his true potential that he showed when he was drafted, and play somewhere, where he will be appreciated and given a fair opportunity. This trade also gives Mims an opportunity to rebuild his value as this is the last year of his rookie deal, and gives him the chance to be a good depth piece on a team that should be extremely competitive this season.
My Thoughts On This Trade
In my opinion, I think Brad Holmes fleeced the New York Jets with this one. The Jets really didn’t have any other choice because they were just going to release him if they couldn’t trade him, but the value the Lions got for what they gave up is incredible. Detroit gets a player who will immediately be a great depth piece and has the potential to be in an even bigger role than that, for only moving down from a sixth to a seventh in 2025. So even if Mims doesn’t become a star, this low-risk high-reward trade for Brad Holmes was a fantastic trade.
